ABOUT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
There are many different styles of wedding photography that you might be wondering which style of wedding photography will best suit the needs of the bride and groom. Here’s a quick crash course on the many different styles of wedding photography you might see as you are shopping around for your San Francisco Wedding Photographer.
TRADITIONAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
As the name implies, traditional style of wedding photography is more of a posed, look here and smile style. This is the original style of wedding photography that harkens back from the days when studio, portrait photographers left the confines of their studios to do on location photography at wedding venues. Back then, photographers were only use to taking pictures of still subjects, thus they made sure the bride and groom were static and still. The traditional wedding photographer also incorporated what they did in the studio, which was basically having the subject stare into the camera lens. A traditional wedding photographer will often shoot from a list given to them from the bride, or a list that they have developed through the years. Old school, traditional wedding photographers often took forever to set up poses, and often missed out on the more spontaneous moments of the wedding day. For the reception, the traditional wedding photographer would often pose a picture of the bride and groom dancing, as well as posing the bride and groom cutting their wedding cake. Today, modern photographers incorporate traditional styles of wedding photography in a more modern form, often doing relaxed poses or doing staged portraits that look more natural and organic.
PHOTO-JOURNALISTIC WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Wedding photojournalism started at around the same time that wedding videography began. Suddenly, you had photographers who were doing photojournalism in other areas, realize that they could capture a wedding in much the same way they could capture any live event or ‘real time life happening’. The confines of setting up poses shots were now gone, and the photo journalistic photographer was no longer restricted or relegated to taking still, portrait photos of family and the wedding guests. These types of photos are also referred to as candid wedding photographs. The journalistic wedding photographer will tell the story of the wedding as it unfolds in front of them, and not rely on a pre planned shot list. With wedding photojournalism, the instincts and how the wedding photographer reacts to the action around them, are crucial to the success of telling the wedding story. Also, photojournalistic wedding photographers often rely on natural light which can add a grainy, lifestyle aspect to the wedding images
